Merry Christmas brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus our Lord! Today we rejoice and celebrate, for it is Christmas, the day when Jesus Christ our Lord was born of the Virgin Mary, so that the salvation of the human race may be attained. It is without a doubt one of the most important days of the year, and indeed of our lives as well. For when Christ was born, then the salvation of the human race was made possible, and so the promises of the Gospel were made possible as well: forgiveness of sin, eternal life, and union with God. When Jesus Christ was born in the manger in Bethlehem, all these things were made possible.
It is significant that God chose to become man to effect his plan for the salvation of the human race. For we know that scripture says that The Word became flesh, and that God gave those who accepted his Son to become children of God. Holy Scripture also says that God's promises to us can lead us to be partakers in the Divine Nature as well, because of Jesus Christ, The Word who became flesh for our sake. So why is it significant that God chose to become one of us to redeem humanity?
One, it is because so that we humans can so clearly see a well-defined clear path to salvation. Jesus Christ as we well know brothers and sisters, is the clearest path to God in the history of the world. He is truly the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through him. God loves humanity a lot, and in order to redeem humanity from sinfulness, God knows that we need to see a clear path to him and away from sin. And God made that known through his Son, Jesus Christ. For when the Word became flesh on Christmas day, the clearest revelation of God was seen, and so when God became like one of us, we can relate to the God-Man and learn from the God-Man, Jesus Christ, and so know the pure and whole truth that comes from God through Jesus Christ our Lord. For the whole truth came through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. By showing us such an obvious path to himself, God showed that he really loves us and wants us to become his children through the birth of Jesus Christ. And so, God took the initiative to us, and now because of his initiative, we know the path to salvation, to true life because Christ is born in Bethlehem. And by being clear to us, we have strong faith in God's promises to us, and we know that we are being saved by the truth, which came through Jesus Christ.
And secondly, it is to show us humans that we can have real love and intimacy with God. We know for a fact that Jesus is God, but he is also human as well. Therefore, we can relate to Jesus Christ. Just as Jesus Christ was of very close intimacy with God, so he also showed to those who would choose to follow him that intimacy with God is truly possible. For with man, it is impossible, but with God all things are possible. By simply following Jesus Christ as he told us on how to follow him (denying ourselves, taking up our crosses, and following him), we can truly have close and loving intimacy with God, something only possible by Jesus Christ being born of the Virgin Mary on Christmas. It is one thing to receive the commandments of God and being told to keep them, but it is on another level when we see someone like us living out that life, and so demonstrating to us that yes, through God's Grace which is seen in Jesus Christ, we can have real intimacy and love with God, so we can be close to God, inherit eternal life, and be heirs to his kingdom.
The Nativity of Jesus Christ really shows us that God truly loves humanity so much, the Son of God became a human being, so that the path to God may be obvious, and so encourage us to follow Jesus Christ. When we show true repentance from sin, and follow Jesus Christ, we truly get to know God in the process of being disciples of Jesus. By knowing God and remaining faithful to God no matter what, we inherit his wonderful promises and gifts he will give us. And all of this is possible, because God loves humanity so much, he wanted to redeem humanity from sin, and so performed one of the greatest miracles to have ever happen in the course of history: The Eternal Word becomes flesh to show us all of the Grace and Truth that we needed for intimacy with God.
The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, who was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem, be with you all. Merry Christmas, and Amen.
